The most difficult question in a job interview

Being that I have recently graduated college and I am actively seeking employment in the field of PR, I wanted to share what I think is the most difficult question in an interview. To me that question is, “So what can you tell me about yourself?”

The reason why I find that question so difficult is that [...]

Michelle McGowan provides perspective on changes in employment.

Critical un-workability.  Apparently it is one of the stages a larva must go through in its cocoon to become a butterfly.  Our country is experiencing critical un-workability, as are many of us.  The status quo just isn’t working. Which means it’s time for a shift.  Shift happens.

I experienced my own state of critical un-workability two years ago. Like the larva, it was time for me to make a change.
Change however is uncomfortable.  Sometimes it’s painful. I fought the change much longer than I should have.  I was in a prestigious, high-paying job. I was vested with full benefits.  It was easy.  And I was miserable.

In my mind, I was stuck.  I had given in to the limited assumption that this was as good as I could do.  With each and every day that passed, I sank deeper into despair, helplessness and hopelessness.

That’s when I experienced critical un-workability.  I was about to turn forty and I was terrified this was good as my life was ever going to get.  I briefly spun out of control. Then, out of nowhere I had a revelation. I realized I was not here just to take-up space, earn a living and spend money.  Like all of us, I was put here to do great things.

The following day, I went to work, gave notice and just like that, I was no longer miserable. I was scared, but I was free! I let go and took a leap of faith, even though I had no idea what I was going to do next.

I was fortunate.  I left a job on my terms.  I had prepared myself for change.  For many however, the economy has hoisted unwelcome change upon them.  For those who have lost jobs, a dramatic and uncomfortable shift is forcing them to reevaluate what to do next.

When I was asked to write a piece on how to find a job within the PR industry, I laughed.  I said, “I don’t know how to find a job in the PR business any more than anybody does.”  What I do know is how I was able to experience transformation in the midst of high-level chaos.
