By Randy Blauvelt, APR, Ethics Chair

The PRSA Colorado Chapter has launched its 2010 “clean and fair” pledge effort aimed at political campaigns in the state. This is where we ask the communications directors of campaigns — or in some cases the candidates themselves — to agree to abide by the PRSA Code of Ethics in conducting their campaign communications. The chapter conducted a similar effort during campaign season 2008.

When signing the pledge, candidates (or in some cases, communications folks for ballot issues) agree to the following:

“To conduct myself professionally, with truth, accuracy, fairness and responsibility to the public; and to abide by the highest standards of ethical communications as described by the Public Relations Society of America’s Code of Ethics. This shall include: being honest and accurate in all campaign communications; acting promptly to correct erroneous communications; investigating the truthfulness and accuracy of information released on behalf of those represented; avoiding deceptive practices. I understand the importance of providing accurate, verified information, to the best of my ability, to the people of Colorado. And, I understand my obligation to do so in a fair and democratic process.”

The letters and pledge forms went out last week under PRSA Colorado President Elisabeth Monaghan’s signature. As of this writing, four campaigns had taken the pledge and returned their forms. They are Republican Mike Coffman and Democrat John Flerlage, who are facing each other in the 6th Congressional District; Republican Mike Fallon, who is running in the 1st Congressional District; and Libertarian Maclyn Stringer, who is running for U.S. Senate. (Subsequent to this posting, Libertarian candidate Rob McNealy, who is running in the 6th Congressional District, also signed the pledge.)

The Chapter is planning some media outreach connected with this effort, so hopefully other candidates and campaigns will sign on soon.
